Jeremiah is a tv show set 15 years after "the big
death", a man made virus which killed everyone over
the age of puberty.
The kids, now all grown up, are trying to bring back
some form of civilisation.

One faction on the show, lead by the
charismatic and fascistic Daniel, has taken over many
cities and rebuilt part of them using slave labour.
Symbol wise, the phoenix (notice it is not the
heraldic one but an american bald eagle) can be taken
to represent the new world coming out of the old yet
still the same (one of Daniel's quoted claim is
"getting things back to normal").
Points should be given to the prop department (and/or
the writer) for avoiding the overused nazi flag.

In the episode called "interegnum" (part 1) of the US tv
serie "Jeremiah", we finaly get to see the flag of the Western
Alliance: the current US national flag. It is not defaced or modified
in any way which I must admit made me a tad disapointed considering the
good job the prop department did on Daniel's flag.
Its use is explained by one of the character who make a speech about
using the "good old symbol" that everyone know (their adversaries
claim to go back to the way things were before the disaster but use
new symbols) and a voice over saying that for 3 minutes no one said
anything but just stared in awe as the flag floated .
On a side note, this scene of the good guys taking the US flag as
their symbol probably pass better in the USA then in other countries
where people might have taken the speech in a slightly different way
(not a judgement, just an observation).
